SUMMARY:Outing to North Wales (Provisional)
DESCRIPTION:Visit Caernarfon & Travel on Festiniog and Welsh Highland Railways – Total Cost ~ £50 pp.\nStart Time :  9-00 a.m. Brookfield Road\, Opposite Davies Way.              \nAs many members live in Stockton Heath and Appleton\, the coach will pick up by prior arrangement along the A56 after leaving Lymm and then along the A49 to the M56. \nI have been asked if this is the same day out as arranged for the Rotary Club in 2018 and the answer is broadly “Yes”\, but much has changed over the past two years – as follows: \nThe Multi-million pound Caernarfon Quayside Re-Development will be completed\, together with the £2M new Welsh Highland Station incorporating Café and Shop – all well worth a look around. \nOn the Welsh Highland Railway\, a new £200\,000 Pullman Observation Car named Gwyrfai has been added to the train to provide a First Class travel experience in some style\, at a surcharge of only £12. Also\, a new Garratt steam locomotive will be commissioned and will be hauling trains of new or refurbished carriages. Pre-Booked Afternoon Teas and hot food are also available on this train. \nA new station building has been opened at Waenfawr which we pass on the journey to Porthmadog. \nThe renovated remains of Bettws Garmon station building can be seen as the train passes\, about one mile after leaving Waenfawr. \nThe weigh-house for the Glanrafon slate workings at the foot of the incline to the quarry are now visible from the train beyond Snowdon Ranger. \nAt Porthmadog\, ‘Spooners’ Station Café and Bar has had a face-lift. \nOn the Festiniog Railway\, another new £200\,000 Pullman Observation Car has been added to the train for upgrade to First Class travel\, at a surcharge of only £8. \nA totally new Double Fairlie steam locomotive – James Spooner – will be commissioned during the season and may be hauling trains by the time of our visit. \nMany forestry plantations have been felling along the line\, allowing greatly improved views across the valley from the train\, on the journey up to Blaenau Ffestiniog. \nObviously it is early days yet\, however\, in order to make this outing a commercial proposition\, I will have to open it up to other societies in a month or so\, to fill sufficient places\, so book now. \nOutline Itinerary: \n9-00 a.m.        Maynes Coach Departs Lymm. \n10-45 approx.            Arrive Caernarfon town square for Coffee and time to explore the historic walled-town of Caernarfon and its Castle (free to CADW & English Heritage Members) and possibly take an early light lunch at the brand-new £2M Welsh Highland Station café\, or in town. \n1 p.m.             Depart Caernarfon WHR Station for Porthmadog via Welsh Highland Railway in comfortable carriages behind 1958 Garratt steam locomotive. \nRefreshments and toilets available on train\, including light hot snacks and Welsh Afternoon Teas\, both subject to availability – but don’t bank on this as stocks are limited ! Options can be pre-booked\, so let me know interest. \n3-15 approx.  Arrive Porthmadog Harbour Station Platform 2. \nThere is time (around 1/2 hour) to browse Porthmadog; Station Shop\, Café or Bar. The station conveniences are located at the far end of Platform 1 – take a look at the amazing new Pullman Observation carriage at the platform opposite. \n3-50 p.m.       Depart Porthmadog Harbour Platform 1 for Blaenau Ffestiniog via Ffestiniog Railway behind historic steam locomotive – Refreshments and toilets available on train\, but not food. First Class options available – extra. \n5-05 p.m. approx.     Transfer from train to Mayne’s coach at Blaenau Ffestiniog station for return journey to Lymm. Return Arrival in Lymm around 1845 hours. \nSome Background Information: \nThe Festiniog Railway is the oldest narrow-gauge railway still in operation in the UK\, authorised by Act of Parliament in 1832 and opened for slate traffic in 1836. Steam locomotives were introduced in 1863 and Carriage of Passengers was authorised in 1865\, just a few months ahead of the Talyllyn Railway. Re-opening began in 1955.   \nThe Welsh Highland Railway was originally authorised for construction in 1872 as part of a larger scheme in the area. 52 years after its closure in 1936\, the trackbed was purchased by the Festiniog Railway for £1 in 1988 and rebuilding began in 1995.       Full through services to Porthmadog resumed in 2011.
